As Melbourne's autumn paints the landscape in vibrant shades of gold and crimson, the picturesque town of Bright becomes a favourite destination for seasonal travellers. For many older Australians, it offers an opportunity to enjoy nature's beauty and create cherished memories.
For Mr Son, however, a recent autumn getaway to Bright was much more than a scenic holiday. It became a meaningful reminder that ageing well is not only about receiving support when needed, but also about feeling genuinely cared for, valued and connected.
"I Felt So Disappointed"
During a recent conversation with Sunrise Aged Care, Mr Son reflected on his previous experience with another aged care provider in Melbourne.
While he had hoped for support that would make daily life easier, the reality was often frustrating and emotionally draining.
Several years ago, an accident affected the use of his arm, making everyday tasks more challenging. One simple request was for a specialised kettle designed for older people and individuals with reduced hand strength, allowing him to prepare hot drinks more safely and independently.
"I had sufficient funding available, and the request was completely reasonable, but the provider kept delaying it," Mr Son recalled.
The same situation occurred when he sought assistance to obtain a more suitable bed to improve his sleep quality. Even routine services such as home cleaning and lawn maintenance often involved lengthy waiting periods.
"It was incredibly frustrating. When you genuinely need support and nothing seems to happen, you start to feel helpless."
One Decision That Changed Everything
Mr Son's introduction to Sunrise Aged Care came unexpectedly.
After months of disappointment and waiting, he happened to see an advertisement for Sunrise Aged Care in a local newspaper. Feeling he had little to lose, he decided to explore another option.
What he did not anticipate was how significantly that decision would improve both his daily life and overall wellbeing.
As he reflected on the transition, his voice brightened.
"I was genuinely happy. Everything I needed was organised quickly. From the bed and the kettle to cleaning and lawn mowing services, everything was arranged promptly and thoughtfully."
Yet what touched him most was not simply the efficiency of the services provided.
It was the feeling that someone genuinely cared.
"It made me feel truly supported," he said quietly.
More Than a Holiday, a Sense of Belonging
One of Mr Son's most memorable experiences since joining Sunrise Aged Care was the Autumn Colours Tour to Bright.
Surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of regional Victoria, he enjoyed not only the beauty of Australia's autumn landscape but also witnessed firsthand the dedication and compassion of the Sunrise team.
"I saw the staff in their purple uniforms helping older participants navigate some very difficult walking paths. They pushed wheelchairs carefully, constantly checking whether people were comfortable, tired or in any pain. And they always did it with a smile."
Although Mr Son still remains relatively mobile despite some weakness in his legs, watching the staff gently assist other participants left a lasting impression.
"You can feel the genuine care they have for people. That level of compassion isn't something everyone can provide."
His face lit up as he recalled the atmosphere later that evening.
"The accommodation was wonderful. That night we all gathered together for a hot pot dinner, sharing stories and laughing together. One of my friends even started singing. It felt like we were young again."
In his smile and the warmth of his memories, it was clear that the experience represented something much deeper than a holiday.
It was a reminder that later life can still be filled with laughter, friendship, meaningful connections and moments worth celebrating.
Supporting Wellbeing Beyond Care Services
What surprised Mr Son most was discovering that Sunrise Aged Care focuses not only on practical support and personal care, but also on enriching the social and emotional wellbeing of older Australians.
As he learned more about the organisation's regular community programs, social gatherings and cultural activities, his enthusiasm continued to grow.
"I'd never participated in community groups before, but after hearing about all the activities Sunrise organises, I wanted to get involved straight away."
Mr Son shared that he and his wife are currently preparing to move closer to Sunrise Aged Care's office so they can participate more easily in future activities and events.
"We both want to be involved. Life becomes more enjoyable when you have friends, activities and opportunities to stay connected."
A Decision Worth Thanking Himself For
As the conversation drew to a close, Mr Son smiled with quiet satisfaction.
For him, the greatest benefit has not simply been receiving services more quickly.
It has been feeling heard, respected and genuinely cared for.
Reflecting on the decision that led him to Sunrise Aged Care, he said:
"I'm truly grateful that I made that decision. Because of it, both my wife and I are enjoying life so much more than we ever expected."
His story is a powerful reminder that quality aged care is about more than services alone. It's about building relationships, fostering connection, and helping older Australians live with dignity, confidence and joy.
At Sunrise Aged Care, this commitment remains at the heart of everything we do—supporting not only the practical needs of our clients, but also the wellbeing, belonging and happiness that make life truly fulfilling.
